I remember watching you sleep when you were the tiniest baby. Praying over you and praying for your safety, and hoping I’d know what to do next.
Now I’m watching you drive next to me. Praying over you and praying for your safety, still hoping I’ll know what to do next.
And while I’m so thankful for your amazing accomplishments and your incredible growth and your stunning mind, I’m also baffled by how it all happened so fast.
That baby who changed our lives was JUST IN MY ARMS. How are you already so tall, with lean, strong arms of your own?
I remember when all our conversations revolved around Thomas the Tank Engine or Lightning McQueen, and sometimes I wasn’t sure if you’d ever stop talking.
How are we now having serious conversations and planning for graduation, and college, and every imaginable life change that makes me swallow the knot in my throat and smile so you’ll keep talking?
I remember teaching you sign language and how to read and how to tie your shoes. You were so eager to learn.
Now you are teaching me how to make a good Instagram story, and who is who in every Star Wars movie, and how to push myself working out. You are so patient and funny while I learn.
I love love love who you are. I love seeing you get excited about something. I love hearing your thoughts about what you’re learning, in school and in our world. I love watching you socialize with friends, and happily hang out with your grandparents.
Oh, sweet child. You are already on your way to a good life. But while I’ve got your ear (and you’re stuck in this house and this car with me), I have a few notes for you. . .
Please be careful. But go on the adventures.
Please follow your heart. But be gentle with the hearts around you.
Please take your time. But know when to take a leap of faith.
Please be kind (to people and to animals). But learn how to stand your ground, and always scoop the poop (of the animals, not the people).
Please strive for whatever success you want to earn. But be generous with your wealth and your time.
Please pray over your babies. But let them become who they’re destined to be.
Please live, really live, a full, happy, wonderful life wherever and however you choose. But remember to call your mama.
Love more,
Mommy
Today is our 21st wedding anniversary. When I think about that number it baffles me…
To my sweet boys, Pay attention. Watch how he treats me. See how he looks…
